What is actually included in that estimate

A complete standby generator installation is a lot more than dropping a machine in the side yard. A legitimate quote covers all of the following. Component figures are estimated ranges:

  • The generator itself — $3,500 to $12,000 depending on size. This is the line item most people focus on, and it is usually only about half the job.
  • Automatic transfer switch (ATS) — $500 to $1,800. This is the device that senses the outage and switches your home over. Whether you need a service-entrance-rated 200A switch or a smaller load-managed switch makes a real price difference.
  • Concrete pad or composite base — $300 to $900. In our area, elevation matters. Flood-prone lots often need the unit set higher, which costs more.

  • Gas line and connection — $500 to $2,500. This is the most commonly underestimated item. A 22 kW unit needs real gas volume, and if your existing meter cannot supply it, the utility has to upsize it.

  • Labor, startup, and commissioning — load testing, programming the exercise schedule, and walking you through operation.

What drives the price up

Two homes of identical size on the same street can get quotes $4,000 apart. Here is usually why:

  • Distance from the panel and the gas meter. Every additional foot of trenching, conduit, and gas pipe adds cost. A unit that sits 15 feet from both is far cheaper than one that has to run 70 feet around the house.
  • Gas meter capacity. If your meter cannot deliver enough cubic feet per hour, you need a utility upgrade. That is a scheduling delay as well as a cost.
  • Propane instead of natural gas. If you are not on a gas main, you are looking at tank purchase or lease plus a regulator setup.
  • Panel condition. Older or full panels sometimes need to be replaced or supplemented before a generator can be tied in safely.
  • Load management vs. whole-panel coverage. Managing a few large loads with smart modules is often cheaper than sizing up the generator to brute-force everything at once.
  • Setback and clearance requirements. Code requires minimum distances from windows, doors, and property lines. Tight lots sometimes force a longer, more expensive run.

Air-cooled or liquid-cooled?

Most Houston-area homes get an air-cooled unit, which covers roughly 10 kW through 26 kW. They are less expensive, physically smaller, and more than adequate for typical suburban homes.

Liquid-cooled units start around 32 kW and use an automotive-style radiator system. They cost significantly more but run cooler under sustained load, last longer, and are the right call for very large homes or anything with commercial-grade demand. Permits are not optional here
