Here is the uncomfortable truth about standby generators. The machine sits outside doing nothing for months at a stretch, then has to start on the worst day of the year. Whether it does comes down to maintenance and repair far more than badge.
Which means the question that matters is not “which brand is most reliable in a lab.” It is: when this unit throws a fault code in August during a five-day outage, who is coming out, and how fast, and can they get the part?
That is where Generac benefits from scale in our market. It holds the largest residential market share in the country, and in the Houston area that translates into more trained technicians, more dealers, and parts sitting on local shelves rather than shipping from a regional warehouse. A less common brand with a slightly better spec sheet is a worse outcome if you wait nine days for a control board.

Air-cooled vs. liquid-cooled, across all brands
This choice affects your experience more than brand does.
Air-cooled units cover roughly 7.5 kW through 26 kW. They are less expensive, physically smaller, and appropriate for the large majority of Houston-area homes. Every brand above builds them.
Liquid-cooled units generally start around 32 kW and use an automotive-style cooling system. They run cooler under sustained load, tend to last longer, are quieter for their output, and cost substantially more. For very large homes, or anywhere you expect multi-day runtime at high load, they are the durable answer.

Noise, and whether it will bother you
All of these run somewhere in the 60–70 decibel range at a normal property-line distance — comparable to a window AC or an active dishwasher. Kohler has a real edge here and markets it honestly; their enclosures and mounting are engineered for it.
Whether that justifies the price difference depends on your lot. On a half-acre in Montgomery County, probably not. On a tight lot where the unit sits twelve feet from your neighbor’s bedroom window, it might be the deciding factor.
Monitoring and remote features
Every brand now offers some form of remote monitoring. In practice this matters more than people expect, because it is how you learn the unit failed a weekly self-test before a storm rather than during one.
Generac’s Mobile Link is the most mature implementation, with LTE options that keep working when your home internet is down — which, during an outage, it will be. That last detail is easy to overlook when comparing feature lists: Wi-Fi-only monitoring goes dark exactly when you want it most.
Fuel type is a bigger decision than brand
All of these run on natural gas or propane. If you are on a gas main, natural gas is almost always the better choice — unlimited runtime, no tank, no refills, no delivery scheduling during a regional emergency.
If you are not on a main, you are on propane, and then tank sizing becomes part of the design. A 22 kW unit works through propane faster than most homeowners expect, and during a widespread outage delivery trucks are backed up. Size the tank for the outage you are actually worried about.
How to compare quotes across brands
Comparing two bids for different brands is harder than it looks, because the equipment is often the smaller variable. Make sure each quote spells out:
- Exact model and kW rating, not just brand and approximate size
- Transfer switch type, amperage, and whether it is service-entrance rated
- Whether permits and inspection fees are included
- Gas line work, and whether a meter upgrade is assumed or excluded
- Warranty length, what it covers, and specifically who performs warranty service locally
- Whether a maintenance plan is included or extra
- Startup, load testing, and homeowner walkthrough
