Why Maintenance Matters

A generator that doesn’t run during an outage isn’t a generator. It’s lawn art.

Houston’s heat, humidity, hurricanes, and ice storms put more demand on a standby generator than almost any other climate in the country. Without scheduled service, the most common failure modes are entirely preventable — and entirely avoidable.

70%
of generator failures during an outage trace to dead batteries or low oil — both routine maintenance items.
2x
A maintained Generac runs roughly twice as long as one that’s never serviced before requiring major repair.

What goes wrong without maintenance

  • Battery dies, generator can’t start the next time the power goes out
  • Old oil breaks down, engine wears out years early
  • Air filter clogs, generator runs hot and shuts down mid-storm
  • Transfer switch contacts oxidize, unit doesn’t transfer to backup power
  • Warranty voided — most manufacturers require documented annual service

Frequently Asked Questions

Generac maintenance, answered

How often does a Generac home generator need maintenance?
Generac recommends annual maintenance — oil and filter change, battery check, and full system test — plus a more thorough inspection every two years. Our Complete Plan includes both visits so you don’t have to track schedules.
How is Generac maintenance pricing structured?
We offer three service plan tiers — Essential, Complete, and Premier — billed monthly or annually. Pricing depends on your generator size, age, and the level of coverage you choose. One-off service visits are quoted per call. Plan members typically save versus paying for individual service calls each year. Contact us for current plan pricing.
Do you service Generac generators you didn’t install?
Yes. As an authorized Generac dealer, we service all Generac residential models across our Greater Houston service area, regardless of who originally installed the unit. Your install history travels with the equipment, not the dealer — bring us your service records and we’ll pick up where the prior installer left off.
My generator stopped working — how fast can you respond?
Plan members get priority dispatch with a guaranteed 24-hour service response. Premier plan members get same-day service. Non-plan customers are scheduled in the order received, typically within 3–5 business days.
What is Mobile Link monitoring?
Mobile Link is Generac’s Wi-Fi-based remote monitoring system. We set it up at install or during your first service visit. It lets us see your generator’s status, fuel level, exercise cycle, and any error codes in real time — so we often know about an issue before you do.
Will maintenance void my warranty?
The opposite — most manufacturers, including Generac, require documented annual maintenance to keep the warranty valid. Service through a certified dealer like Texas Star Power is what keeps your warranty intact.
